Debbe Hull taught a class at Beads N' Beyond in the autumn of 2009 on embellishing. To demonstrate she taught us to make what she called the Embassador necklace. Hers had a lot of braiding for the two ends that go around the neck, cross, and hang down the front.

Then Debbe showed us the work of her teacher Helen Dietz. Helen lived in Sacramento and her daughter still has a bead store there.

What a joy to find helen and her work! Finally someone was making necklaces that were like the ones in my head! I went home and went wild.

This was my first one. I have several different photos of it because I kept taking it apart and redoing parts of it hoping to get it better. I finally gave it to Gualala Arts for a prize in a fundraiser.

This shows how I lay out the necklace. I find a center focal point and several smooth beads with large holes for the back of the neck. I start with four long strings coming from the focal point on the left and right. From the focal point they fan out with various beads keeping the selection heavier at the center and smaller as they approach the neck. Across the back of the neck there is one set of strands from the left crossing to dangle down on the right. And the opposite is also true.

This necklace needs no findings as the weight of the hanging ends holds the necklace balanced and in place. Here I was using Debbe's string called Dycon but I also use Stringth cording in nice colors.
